Neutron-fed afterglows of gamma-ray bursts

چکیده

A neutron component is practically inevitable in baryonic fireballs of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). At late stages of the explosion, the neutrons fully decouple from the ion ejecta and coast freely. The presence of the neutron ejecta qualitatively changes the mechanism of the GRB afterglow. The neutrons lead the decelerating blast wave and gradually decay, leaving behind a trail of the decay products mixed with the ambient medium. The kinetic energy of the decay products far exceeds the medium rest energy, and the trail has a Lorentz factor γ 1 at radii up to 10 cm. The ion ejecta decelerate behind as they sweep up the neutron trail and drive a shock wave into it. The afterglow is emitted by the preshock and postshock parts of the neutron trail. The neutron-fed afterglow can re-brighten at an observed time of tens of days. Subject headings: Cosmology: miscellaneous — gamma-rays: bursts — radiation mechanisms: nonthermal — shock waves

X-Ray Afterglows from Gamma-Ray Bursts

We consider possible interpretations of the recently detected X-ray afterglow from the gamma-ray burst source GRB 970228. Cosmological and Galactic models of gamma-ray bursts predict different flux and spectral evolution of X-ray afterglows. We show that models based on adiabatic expansion of relativistic forward shocks require very efficient particle energization or post-burst re-acceleration ...

Gamma Ray Bursts from Stellar Collisions

We propose that the cosmological gamma ray bursts arise from the collapse of neutron stars to black holes triggered by collisions or mergers with main sequence stars. This scenario represents a cosmological history qualitatively different from most previous theories because it contains a significant contribution from an old stellar population, namely the globular clusters. Furthermore, the gas ...

High Column Densities and Low Extinctions of Gamma-ray Bursts: Evidence for Hypernovae and Dust Destruction

We analyze a complete sample of g-ray burst afterglows and find X-ray evidence for high column densities of gas around them. The column densities are in the range 10–10 cm, which is right around the average column density of Galactic giant molecular clouds. We also estimate the cloud sizes to be 10–30 pc, implying masses *10 . This strongly suggests that g-ray bursts lie within star-forming reg...

Last Moments in the Life of a Compact Binary System: Gravitational Waves, Gamma-ray Bursts and Magnetar Formation

The first detections of afterglows from short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have confirmed the previous suspicion that they are triggered by a different central engine than long bursts. In particular, the recent detections of short GRBs in galaxies without star formation lends support to the idea that an old stellar population is involved. Most prominent are mergers of either double neutron stars or ...

Red-shift Distribution of Gamma-ray Bursts and Their Progenitors

Gamma ray bursts have been divided into two classes, long-soft gamma ray burst and short-hard gamma ray burst according to the bimodal distribution in duration time. Due to the harder spectrum and the lack of afterglows of short-hard bursts in optical and radio observations, different progenitors for short-hard bursts and long-soft bursts have been suggested. Based on the X-ray afterglow observ...
